PDF watermark remover: what actually works in 2026

Canva Pro came out ahead on documents. It imports the PDF, Magic Eraser lifts the stamp, and a clean PDF comes back in one pass, scoring 8.9/10 across our two document files. For a scanned page, Photoshop’s Generative Fill produced the cleaner result. But the tool matters less than the diagnosis: a DRAFT stamp sitting in the text layer is best removed in the source document rather than in any PDF tool at all.

Most pages ranking for this query list a dozen converters that flatten your document and mangle the text on the way through. Two situations decide this page: a stamp sitting in the text layer, and a scanned page where the mark and the words share the same pixels. Nothing appears here unless it handles one of them without destroying the document.

Canva Pro: quickest clean result on a layout PDF

When Canva put the mark there, licensing it beats reconstructing it on both price and quality.

Canva Pro kept the entire job inside one editor. It imported our two-page test PDF with the layout intact, Magic Eraser removed the centred DRAFT stamp in a single stroke, and the export returned as a PDF with both pages visually clean. On the scanned page it cleared the tiled mark acceptably, with slight softness where the mark crossed body text.

The caveat deserves stating plainly: Canva converts pages on import, so a heavily formatted contract can shift, and text living inside a scan stays an image throughout. For a flyer, a menu or a single-page proposal it is the fastest clean result we found. Check the export carefully before anything legal leaves your desk. The 30-day trial covers a one-off document at no cost.

  • Licences the asset instead of erasing the mark, so exports come out clean for good
  • Magic Eraser lifts stamps and objects off photos without leaving the editor
  • Bulk Create stamps your own branding across hundreds of designs in one run
  • Useless on a mark that came from any app but Canva
  • The bill climbs quickly once you add seats

Photoshop Generative Fill: the answer for a scanned page

Nothing else comes close on stills, on the condition that you already work in it.

Photoshop treats a PDF page as an image, which is precisely correct for a scan. It rasterised our scanned contract at 300 dpi, Generative Fill rebuilt the paper texture beneath the tiled TRIAL mark, and the re-exported page was the cleanest scan result in this comparison, with the stamp gone even where it ran across signatures.

The workflow is what you pay: page by page, no text layer preserved, and no free tier to fall back on. Use it when the document was already a scan, or when the mark crosses detail that a one-tap eraser turns to mush. Our Photoshop review covers its removal modes in depth.

  • Generative Fill invents texture at a level no dedicated remover reaches
  • When the AI guesses wrong you can fix it by hand instead of re-rolling
  • Actions and scripts turn a repeat job into one unattended run
  • Far too much app to learn for a single removal
  • Video marks are outside what Photoshop itself will touch

Find where the mark lives, then pick the method

Two kinds of PDF watermark, and how to tell them apart

Try to select the mark like text. If you can, it is an object in the layout. If you cannot, it is baked into the page image.

Every watermark in a PDF is one of two things. Either it is an object the file describes, a semi-transparent text or image element drawn over each page, which is the classic DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL stamp. Or it is baked into the page itself, which is what happens once a marked document has been scanned, screenshotted or flattened on export.

The ten-second diagnosis settles your route entirely: put the text cursor over the watermark and try to select it. Selectable or highlightable means an object, and an editor can delete it cleanly with nothing lost. Not selectable means pixels, and you need reconstruction, which is the same job as clearing a mark off a photograph.

Clearing a DRAFT stamp from a document you own

The cleanest fix is upstream: delete the stamp in the source file and export the PDF again.

An object watermark was placed by software, usually the DRAFT stamp your own word processor or a trial PDF printer applied. Where you still hold the source file, remove it there, in Word under Design, then Watermark, then Remove, or by deleting the header element in Google Docs, and export again. The result is perfect because nothing anywhere gets reconstructed.

Without the source, a PDF editor that lists page objects can delete the stamp element directly and leave the text layer selectable. That is the single job where a dedicated PDF editor beats everything in this ranking. The tools above earn their place on the cases an object delete simply cannot reach.

When the mark has been scanned into the page

A scanned mark is a photo problem wearing a PDF extension. Image tools win, and the text layer has already gone.

Once a marked page has passed through a scanner, the watermark and the text occupy the same layer of pixels, and no PDF editor can pull them apart. The working route is the one Photoshop took in this comparison: rasterise the page, reconstruct the area beneath the mark, re-export, then run OCR if selectable text needs to come back.

Resolution decides the quality. At 300 dpi the reconstruction had enough information to rebuild paper texture convincingly, while a 96 dpi export smudged badly. For one simple page, a browser remover working on a screenshot gets you a clean image quickly. It simply will not be a real PDF until you reassemble it.

The opposite job: stamping your own documents

For marking PDFs you own, Watermarkly batches them in the browser without uploading anything.

The mirror task, branding or protecting your own PDFs, has considerably better tooling than removal does. Watermarkly applies text or logo marks across batches of documents and processes them inside the browser without sending anything to a server, which matters a great deal for contracts.

Placement rules match those for photographs: over the content rather than the margins, at an opacity that survives a reconstruction attempt. Our protect your work section covers watermark design that is genuinely worth having rather than decorative.

What to check before the document leaves your desk

Three checks catch almost every failure: text selection, page count, and the area where the mark used to sit.

A cleaned PDF can look right on screen and still be broken in ways that matter. Select some body text to confirm the layer survived where it should have. Count the pages, because import and re-export routes occasionally drop or merge them. Then zoom to 100 % on the region the mark occupied and look for a soft rectangle.

For anything contractual, add a fourth check: open the file in a different reader than the one you exported from. Rendering differences between viewers are how a mark that looked cleared turns out to be sitting in an annotation layer that only some software chooses to display.

Removing a PDF watermark: practical answers

What is the right way to clear a mark from a PDF?

Start by finding where it lives. If the mark selects like text, delete it in the source document or a PDF editor and keep a perfect file. If it is part of the page image, use Canva Pro for a quick clean pass or Photoshop for scans. Our test scored Canva 8.9/10 on this job.

Can this be done without paying anything?

Where the source document is yours, removing the stamp there and exporting again costs nothing and beats every tool available. For a flattened mark, Canva’s 30-day Pro trial covers a one-off document, and a free image remover can clean a screenshot of a simple page at reduced quality.

How do you get rid of a DRAFT stamp specifically?

DRAFT stamps are usually objects in the layout, applied by Word or by a PDF printer. In Word: Design, then Watermark, then Remove Watermark, then export again. Without the source file, delete the stamp object in a PDF editor, and only reach for image tools once the page has been flattened or scanned.

Is a scanned document a lost cause?

Not at all, but it is image reconstruction rather than PDF editing, because the mark and the document share the same pixels. Photoshop’s Generative Fill gave the cleanest result on our scanned test page at 300 dpi. Expect to run OCR afterwards if you need the text selectable again.

Will the text still be selectable afterwards?

Only if you took the object-delete route. Removing a stamp in the source document, or deleting it as a page object, leaves the text layer untouched. Canva and Photoshop both work on the page as an image, so selectable text survives only where the original layer existed and OCR can restore the rest.

Where is the legal line on document marks?

Your own documents, your organisation’s files, and output from software you licence are all fine. Removing marks from paid or protected documents you do not own, stamped sample reports, licensed standards, paywalled papers, is exactly what those marks exist to prevent, and nothing here is intended for that.

Why did the file get much larger after cleaning?

Because a text-based page became an image one. Rasterising at 300 dpi replaces compact vector text with pixels, which can multiply the file size several times over. Re-running OCR and saving with a text layer brings some of it back, though it will rarely return to the original size.

Do online PDF watermark removers work?

Some clear the mark and most flatten the document doing it, which is the trade nobody mentions. They convert the page to an image, reconstruct the marked area, and hand back a PDF whose text can no longer be selected or searched. For a flyer that is irrelevant, and for a contract it quietly destroys the thing that made it a document.
