Photoshop Generative Fill review: 8.3/10 as a watermark remover

On still images nothing we have compared reaches as high as Generative Fill, and the margin is not subtle. It put the weave back under our densest text stamp, the single file that went soft in every dedicated remover on the bench. Scored strictly as a watermark tool it settles at 8.3/10, because that ceiling sits on top of a floor: the hardest learning curve here and no free tier at all.

Which makes the buying case an odd one. Subscribing to Photoshop purely to clear watermarks is indefensible. Already paying for the Photography plan at $9.99, or genuinely needing detail to survive at print resolution? Then the strongest still-image remover in existence is already sitting on your machine.

The highest quality score on the bench, and the lowest ease score

8.3/10 overall, against 8.3 for the 7 removers in this comparison.

The 9.6 for output quality is the highest figure any criterion earns from any remover we score, and it held precisely where the field collapses: dense texture, marks lying across faces, fine detail at full resolution. Ease at 6.8 is its exact mirror, the lowest in the ranked set, and it counts real steps between opening the file and exporting it.

Batch at 8.4 is a score for Actions rather than a queue. A recorded removal replays identically over a folder, carrying sharpening and export settings along with it, which is control no queue tool on the bench offers. Value at 8.0 is calculated on the Photography plan, not the full Creative Cloud subscription.

Speed sits at 7.4, and that number is mostly the human. The generation itself resolves in seconds; the selection, the variation review and the flatten-and-export sequence are what the clock records.

Generative Fill against the files that beat every other tool

Every tool on this site runs the same 12 files. These are the four that decide the score.

  1. The two files nothing else survived

Our patterned-fabric shot with a dense text stamp is the executioner of this bench. Every one-tap tool flattened the weave. Generative Fill rebuilt it convincingly under 100 % inspection. A mark running across a face is the other case that breaks the field, and Generative Fill is the only thing here with the regeneration and manual control to attempt it.

When the first generation guessed badly, regenerating or stepping through the alternative variations resolved it, a fallback no dedicated remover provides at all.

  2. Counting the learning curve honestly

Starting cold, our easiest file took longer inside Photoshop than our hardest file took inside AniEraser. Open, select with intent, fill, judge three variations, flatten, export. Each step is trivial on its own; together they are a skill somebody has to acquire.

For an existing user that gap simply is not there. The 6.8 ease score is priced for the person the search query implies, who is standing outside the app deciding whether to learn it.

  3. Running a folder through a recorded Action

An Action records one removal and replays it across a folder. Identical treatment throughout, with output sharpening and format conversion folded into the same pass, which is a level of control no queue tool matches. Building the Action so it ran reliably took longer than most tools need to finish the entire batch.

It repays itself on recurring, exacting work, the same conclusion the batch ranking reaches. The warning attached is symmetrical: an error in the Action repeats thirty times too.

  4. The two things Photoshop will not do

Video is out, entirely. Clearing a mark from footage belongs to HitPaw and the tools on the video ranking, with no Photoshop route worth attempting. And there is no free tier, only seven days, against competitors that stay genuinely free for casual work.

Generative credits also meter heavy Fill use on the entry plans. Our test runs never approached the ceiling, but it is worth knowing before committing to a large retouching project.

Photoshop plans, the seven-day trial and generative credits

Read off the Adobe site in August 2026, individual plans on annual billing.

Photoshop Generative Fill plans compared
Plan Price What it unlocks
Photography plan Our pick $9.99 per month Photoshop and Lightroom, 20 GB storage: the tier that makes sense here
Photoshop single app $22.99 per month Photoshop by itself with more storage, and poor value beside the bundle
Free trial $0 7 days Complete access, briefly, which is enough to run your own worst files

Seven days, and nothing free after that

A free Photoshop does not exist. The seven-day trial covers a concentrated burst of testing or one urgent job, and cancelling inside the window is straightforward rather than a fight.

For a genuinely free route on stills, the daily HD exports at Dewatermark.ai cover the everyday cases this tool is wildly overqualified for.

Why only the Photography plan makes sense

At $9.99 it costs what the dedicated removers cost while including Lightroom, and it is the assumption our value score rests on. The $22.99 single-app plan exists for procurement departments, not for this job.

If the real question is whether you want to learn this, the trial settles it faster than any review can. Push your three most difficult files through Generative Fill and look at what comes back.

Photoshop as a remover: the trade in full

  • Generative Fill invents texture at a level no dedicated remover reaches
  • When the AI guesses wrong you can fix it by hand instead of re-rolling
  • Actions and scripts turn a repeat job into one unattended run
  • Far too much app to learn for a single removal
  • Video marks are outside what Photoshop itself will touch

Removing watermarks in Photoshop: common questions

How well does Photoshop remove a watermark?

On stills, better than anything else we have scored. Generative Fill posted 9.6 for output quality and reconstructed detail, fabric weave and marks over faces, that defeated every dedicated remover. What it costs you is the hardest learning curve here plus a subscription.

What are the actual steps in Photoshop?

Lasso loosely around the mark, run Generative Fill leaving the prompt box empty, choose the best of three variations, flatten and export. The empty prompt is the part people miss: it instructs the model to continue the surrounding image rather than invent a subject.

Should you subscribe to Photoshop for this alone?

No, and the 8.3 reflects that. For routine marks, tools at the same price finish in seconds. It becomes worth it when Creative Cloud is already paid for, or when texture, faces and print resolution are what the job genuinely involves.

Will Photoshop clear a watermark from a clip?

It will not. Photoshop handles stills only for this task. Footage belongs to HitPaw in our rankings, and the video watermark remover page compares every tool that rebuilds frames rather than images.

Which Adobe plan should you actually buy?

The Photography plan at $9.99 monthly, which bundles Lightroom and is the price our value score assumes. The $22.99 single-app tier adds nothing that matters for removal work. Seven free days cover testing against your own files first.

What is the closest thing to Photoshop for watermarks?

HitPaw for near-parity on most files with video included. AniEraser when getting it done on any device outweighs the last few percent of quality. Dewatermark.ai, free, for the ordinary stills that never needed this much tool in the first place.

Do generative credits run out mid-project?

They can on the entry plans, which meter heavy Generative Fill use rather than blocking it outright. Nothing in this comparison runs came close to the limit, but a large retouching job is worth checking your allowance against before you start.

What Photoshop is really for here

8.3/10 as a remover, carrying the highest output-quality score on the bench and the steepest learning curve behind it.
